UCLA Overtakes Number One Spot In Women's Varsity Top 25 Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- For the second week in a row the No. 1 position changes hands as the University of California-Los Angeles, on the strength of a 10-9 defeat of previously No. 1-ranked Stanford University, climbs to the top of the standings in highlighting the 2017 Week 14/April 19 Women's Varsity Top 25, Division III Top 10, Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls released today by the CWPA.

The ranking marks the first time a team other than either Stanford or the University of Southern California has held the No. 1 spot in the Top 25 since UCLA topped the Week 4/February 10 Poll during the 2016 season.

The remainder of the four National Polls remain relatively unchanged as Whittier College hangs onto the top position in the Division III Top 10, with similarly no major changes occurring in either the CWPA Top 10 or the CWPA Division III Top Five as the University of Michigan (CWPA Top 10) and Washington & Jefferson College (CWPA Division III Top Five) remain at No. 1.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Women's Varsity polls are compiled and released on each Wednesday during the season through the week following the NCAA Championship.

2017 WOMEN'S VARSITY NATIONAL TOP 25 (WEEK 14/APRIL 19)

The University of California-Los Angeles returns to the No. 1 position in the National Poll for the first time since the Week 4/February 10 balloting during the 2016 season as the Bruins lead the Week 14/April 19 Women's Varsity National Top 25 Poll.

UCLA (98 points), which displaces former No. 1 Stanford University (95 points) to drop the Cardinal into a tie at No. 2 with fellow previously top-ranked the University of Southern California (95 points), acquires the top spot thanks to a 10-9 defeat of the Cardinal.  

It marks the second time in as many weeks the No. 1 position changes hands as Stanford returned to top berth for the first time since the Week 6 balloting last week after rating as the best team in the country for the Preseason, Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5 and Week 6 Top 26 Polls.  USC topped the National Top 25 Poll in Weeks 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 as the Bruins become the third team to rate at No. 1 this season.

Another tie occurs at No. 4 as the University of California (86 points) pulls even with Arizona State University (86 points). The remainder of the Top remains relatively unchanged as the University of California-Irvine (78 points), the University of Michigan (75 points) and  the University of Hawaii (74 points) hang on at No. 6-to-8, respectively.  The only other thance to occur in the Top 10 comes at No. 9 as Princeton University (65 points) gains company due to previously No. 10 the University of the Pacific (65 points) as the Tigers tie the Tigers.

San Diego State University (60 points) remains at No. 11 with Long Beach State University (52 points) improving three spots to take over at No. 12.  The University of California-Davis (51 points) remains at No. 13 with the University of California-Santa Barbara (48 points), Hartwick College (43 points), San Jose State University (39 points), Indiana University (38 points) and the University of California-San Diego (34 points) readjusting to stand at No. 14-to-18, respectively.

Wagner College (30 points), Harvard University (24 points), Loyola Marymount University (20 points) and CSU Bakersfield (17 points) retain the No. 19-to-22 slots with California State University-Northridge (9 points), Marist College (8 points) and the Virginia Military Institute (4 points) completing this week's Top 25.

2017 WOMEN'S VARSITY DIVISION III TOP 10 (WEEK 14/APRIL 19)

Whittier College remains at No. 1 in the Week 14/April 19 Division III Top 10 Poll.

The Poets (99 points) expand their lead to three points over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (96 points) this week after leading 98-to-96 seven days ago.

The University of La Verne (87 points) pulls even with California Lutheran University (87 points) to tie at No. 3, with Chapman University (80 points) once again completing an All-California Top Five.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (75 points), the University of Redlands (71 points), Occidental College (52 points), Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III regular season champion Washington & Jefferson College (48 points) and Macalester College (34 points) remain at No. 6-to-10, respectively.

 

Carthage College (23 points) and Connecticut College (23 points) also received votes.

2017 WOMEN'S CWPA TOP 10 (WEEK 14/APRIL 19)

2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion, preseason favorite and 2017 CWPA regular season champion the University of Michigan continues its domination by retaining status as the No. 1 team in the Week 14/April 19 CWPA Top 10 Poll.

Unlike previous weeks in which none of the positions in the Top 10 did not change hands, a shift occurs this week behind the Wolverines (100 points) and Princeton University (94 points) as Hartwick College (90 points) usurps Indiana University (86 points) as the Hawks downed the Hoosiers by an 8-6 count over the weekend at Brown University.

Harvard University (80 points), Brown (75 points), Bucknell University (70 points), George Washington University (65 points), Saint Francis University (48 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (45 points) complete the Top 10.

Macalester College (22 points) also received votes.

2017 WOMEN'S CWPA DIVISION III TOP 5 (WEEK 14/APRIL 19)

2014, 2015 and 2016 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship runner-up and 2017 CWPA Division III regular season champion Washington & Jefferson College stays at No. 1 in the Week 14/April 19 CWPA Division III Top Five Poll entering the group's championship this weekend at Macalester College.

The Presidents (98 points) hold a narrow one-point lead over Macalester (97 points) as W&J's lead has diminished from 26-points two weeks ago to two points last week.

Carthage College (90 points) remains at No. 3 with Monmouth College (83 points) and four-time CWPA Division III Champion (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) Connecticut College (82 points) sticking at No. 4 and 5 for another week.
