USA Women Win Group At FINA Youth World Championship With 8-7 Victory Over Hungary

Belgrade, Serbia - August 29 - After winning their first two games at the FINA Women's Youth World Championship by a combined score of 51-4, the USA Women's Youth National Team had a close game on their hands on the final day of group play. Team USA battled back from an early deficit to defeat Hungary 8-7 finishing group play 3-0 and earning a bye into the quarterfinal round on Friday. Valerie Ayala, Abbi Hill, Honnie Vandeweghe and Bayley Weber all scored two goals in the victory with Thea Walsh posting 11 saves in net. Hill was named the player of the match for the second straight day.

Hungary opened up strong in the first quarter holding Team USA scoreless while building a 1-0 lead. The United States battled back with four goals in the second quarter to force a 4-4 tie at halftime. In the third quarter they surged ahead outscoring Hungary 3-1 to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Hungary tied things up at 7-7 in the fourth quarter but Team USA was able to push ahead on the outscore from Ayala to secure the win.

Team USA went 4/9 on power plays and 0-1 on penalties while Hungary was 4/11 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
