USA Women Advance To Semifinals Of World University Games With 13-7 Win Over Canada

Taipei, Taiwan - August 26 - The USA Women's National Team has advanced to the semifinals of the World University Games following a 13-7 win over Canada. Six different players scored two goals to lead a balanced offensive attack with Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford) adding 10 saves. Team USA now advances to meet Japan in the semifinal round on Sunday at 7:30am et/4:30am pt. For more information on the tournament visit 2017.taipei. Canada struck first in this match scoring a little over a minute into the game for a 1-0 lead. Team USA responded with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead after one quarter. Mary Brooks (Fresno, CA/UC Irvine) scored the first two and Jamie Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) added the last two to build the three goal lead.

Team USA continued to build in the second scoring the first two of the period on goals from Jordan Raney (Manhattan Beach, CA/Stanford) and Stephanie Mutafyan (Los Alamitos, CA/California) for a 6-1 lead with 2:58 to play in the first half. Canada followed with a goal but Kiley Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) closed the half with a goal as time experied to give the United States a 7-2 lead at intermission. 

Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA) scored the first goal of the third quarter in the opening moments of the quarter for an 8-2 lead. Canada scored three of the next five goals to close out the third cutting their deficit to five goals going to the fourth leaving Team USA ahead 10-5.

The United States halted any thoughts of a comeback from Canada by scoring three of the first four goals in the fourth, including two from Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford), to go ahead 13-6 with 5:46 left in the match. Canada added a goal late but Team USA went on for the 13-7 victory.

Team USA went 5/6 on power plays and Canada went 4/8 on the advantage with neither side attemtping a penalty shot.
