USA Women Down Italy 16-3 To Claim Group B Title At World University Games

Taipei, Taiwan - August 24 - The USA Women's National Team continues to roll along at the World University Games after defeating Italy 16-3 today for their fourth straight win to claim the Group B title. Jamie Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) scored four goals with Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford) and Mia Rycraw (Walnut, CA/Arizona State) combining for nine saves. The USA Women took control at the start building a 4-0 lead in the opening period. Madison Berggren (Tualatin, OR/Stanford) scored two of the first three goals followed by a Jamie Neushul goal to take a four goal advantage into the second period. They continued to pile on the offense in the second with Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford) opening the scoring at the 4:39 mark for a 5-0 advantage. Brigitta Games (Littleton, CO/USC) followed with two straight goals for a 7-0 lead at halftime. 

Mary Brooks (Fresno, CA/UC Irvine) put Team USA ahead 8-0 on the opening possession of the third quarter by delivering a power play goal. Italy got on the board a few minutes later with their first goal to cut the deficit to 8-1. Team USA responded with three straight goals to go ahead 11-1, the last coming from Jamie Neushul with 3:47 to play in the period. Italy scored their second goal of the period not long after but Jamie Neushul and Games answered with goals for a 13-2 lead after three.

The Neushuls teamed up in the fourth quarter to put the match away. Kiley Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) scored the first two goals of the period to make it 15-2. After the last goal of the match from Italy, Jamie Neushul tacked on another score with 3:03 to play in the game as Team USA crusied to the 16-3 win. 

The United States went 3/7 on power plays while Italy was 2/7 with neither side attempting a penalty shot.
