USA Women Defeat Australia 17-3 For Third Straight Win At World University Games

Taipei, Taiwan - August 22 - The USA Women's National Team defeated Australia 17-3 for their third straight victory at the World University Games in Taiwan. Kat Klass (Danville, CA/Stanford) scored three goals to lead an offense that saw every field player score at least once. Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford) and Mia Rycraw (Walnut, CA/Arizona State) combined for eight saves in net. Team USA stormed out a strong start opening up a 4-0 lead in the first quarter on two goals from Jamie Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) along with one each from Jordan Raney (Manhattan Beach, CA/Stanford) and Klass. Australia scored late in the period to make it a 4-1 match going to the second.

It was a similar scene in the second quarter as Team USA did the bulk of the scoring. They ran off five unanswered goals to take a 9-1 lead on a Klass goal with 1:53 to play. Australia again added a late score but the United States had the match in control up 9-2 at intermission.

In the third quarter Team USA blanked Australia 3-0 on goals from Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA), Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford) and Dani Jackovich (New Lenox, IL/Stanford) for a 12-2 lead after three. 

Kiley Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) scored two straight to open the fourth period and Brigitta Games (Littleton, CO/USC) added another with 4:07 left in the match for a 15-2 lead. Australia stopped the run moments later with a goal but the outcome had been decided. Team USA added two more goals, one from Klass and another from Stephanie Mutafyan (Los Alamitos, CA/California) to finish off the match up 17-3.

Team USA went 2/5 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while Australia was 1/9 on power plays and 0/1 on penalties.
