USA World University Game Women Open Play With 15-4 Victory Over France

Taipei, Taiwan - August 19 - The USA Women's National Team got off to a strong start at the World University Games defeating France 15-4 to open competition. Madison Berggren (Tualatin, OR/Stanford) led the way with four goals while Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford) posted 8 saves in net. Team USA set the tone early in the win over France going up 5-1 in the first quarter. After Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA) scored to open play, Kiley Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford) followed with two straight goals including the first of four penalty shots Team USA would convert on the day. Bergrren closed the period with two straight goals to build the four goal advantage. 

The scoring dropped off a bit in the second but Team USA added two more goals including a penalty shot score, this time from Berggren for a 7-2 lead at halftime. They put the game away in the third quarter scoring four in a row to begin the period including two straight from Mary Brooks (Fresno, CA/UC Irvine) to claim an 11-3 lead after three.

The United States repeated the feat in the fourth, again scoring the first four goals of the period to build a 15-3 lead on the way to a 15-4 victory. Team USA went 2/4 on power plays and 4/4 on penalties while France was 2/4 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty.
