USA Women Win Second Straight At World Championships With 12-8 Victory Over Spain

Budapest, Hungary - July 18 - The latest installment of the USA-Spain rivalry took place on day two of women's water polo action in Budapest with Team USA taking the match 12-8. Maddie Musselman (Newport Beach, CA/UCLA/CdM Aquatics) and Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Stanford/NYAC) scored three goals to pace the offense while Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford/SD Shores) logged 11 saves in net. Today's match will air on delay on the Olympic Channel at 4pm et/1pm pt. The win likely secures the United States top honors in Group B earning a bye into the quarterfinals. Next up for Team USA is the final match in group play on Thursday against New Zealand at 12:50pm et/9:50am pt. The match will stream live on the Olympic Channel here and will air on delay at 6pm et/3pm pt. 

The United States set the tempo early in this match opening up a 6-1 lead in the first quarter. It was Spain who struck first only to watch the United States run off six in a row started by back-to-back scores from Musselman. Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/SOCAL), Jamie Neushul (Isla Vista, CA/Stanford/Santa Barbara 805), Kiley Neushul and Aria Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS/SET) scored the rest of the goals in the first. 

Spain battled back in the second scoring two of the next three goals to trail 7-3 at halftime. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/NYAC) and Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/HBWPC) followed with goals to give the United States their largest lead at 9-3. Spain scored twice before the end of the third bringing the score to 9-5 in favor of Team USA going to the fourth. 

While Spain's offense continued to come alive in the second half with three goals in the fourth quarter, the United States was up to the task matching the effort with three of their own. Musselman tacked on her final goal of the match in the fourth and Team USA was able to secure the four goal victory. 

Team USA went 3/7 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shot attempts while Spain was 6/10 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shot attempts. For complete World Championships results, click here.
