USA Women Will Play For Gold At FINA Junior World Championships Following 10-3 Defeat Of Greece


Rachel Fattal scored four goals to help stop Greece

Volos, Greece - August 24 - The USA Women's Junior National Team will play for gold at the FINA Women's Junior World Championships following a 10-3 defeat of Greece. Rachel Fattal scored four goals and Ashleigh Johnson added 10 saves in net in the victory. Team USA moves on to play Spain tomorrow in the final at 9:00am pst on Sunday. The first period got off to a slow start for both teams as the first goal wasn't scored until the 2:40 mark when Monica Vavic connected for a 1-0 lead. Kiley Neushul followed with a goal with :29 left in the period for a 2-0 lead. Greece added a late score with just ten seconds to play to trail 2-1 headed to the second. Less than a minute into the second period Greece found the net to the tie the game at 2-2. That would be as close as they would get in the match as the United States would score five unanswered goals. Emily Donohoe and Fattal would score two goals along with one from Makenzie Fischer for a 7-2 halftime lead.

Team USA kept up the attack in the third with a goal from Alys Williams and another from Fattal to cap a seven goal run, ahead 9-2 with 2:49 left. Greece stopped the run with a goal with 1:29 left in the period to trail 9-3 after three periods. The United States scored the only goal of the fourth, a final tally from Fattal, to take a 10-3 lead with 6:51 remaining. The Team USA defense would do the job the rest of the way securing the 10-3 victory.

The United States went 1/5 on power plays in the victory. "We controlled the tempo of the game from the start," said USA Head Coach Dan Klatt. "We were extremely disciplined on defense and we are excited to start preparing for tomorrow."
