USA Men Will Play For Ninth Place At World University Games After 8-4 Win Over Australia

Taipei, Taiwan - August 27 - The USA Men's National Team has advanced to the 9th place game at the World University after defeating Australia 8-4. Nolan McConnell (Laguna Beach, CA/Long Beach State), Connor Neumann (Danville, CA/Calfornia), and Nic Carniglia (Lodi, CA/California) all scored two goals each to lead the offense. Chris Whitelegge (Costa Mesa, CA/Coastline CC) added 10 saves in net. McConnell scored to open match for a 1-0 lead with 5:40 to play in the first quarter. Australia tied it not long after but Neumann delivered a goal with just :12 left in the first for a 2-1 lead after one. Team USA took control in the second quarter outscoring Australia 3-0 to build a 5-1 advantage at halftime. Alex Obert (Loomis, CA/Pacific), Neumann and Carniglia all added goals in the run.

Australia got back in the game in the third scoring two of the next three goals to cut the deficit to 6-3 headed to the fourth quarter. Team USA had an answer in the fourth as they scored the first two goals of the period to go ahead 8-3 on deliveries from Ben Stevenson (Reno, NV/Pacific) and McConnell. Australia scored with a little over two minutes to play but it wouldn't factor in the decision as Team USA won 8-4. 

Team USA went 1/4 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties while Australia was 3/10 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty.
