USA Men Outlast Romania 13-10 In Shootout To Advance To 9-12 Bracket At World University Games

Taipei, Taiwan - August 25 - The second meeting this week with Romania was a lot closer than the first for the USA Men's National Team but the result was the same. Days after defeating Romania 12-6, Team USA won again 13-10 in a shootout to advance to the 9th-12th bracket at the World University Games. Romania jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter but Chancellor Ramirez (Pasadena, CA/UCLA) answered with two straight goals to tie the match at 2-2 after eight minutes. Romania scored to start the second taking a 3-2 lead but that was short-lived. Nic Carniglia (Davis, CA/California) scored two of the next three goals for Team USA as they took a 5-3 advantage into halftime. 

Ben Stevenson (Reno, NV/Pacific) started the third with a goal and a 6-3 lead with 5:58 to play in the period. After Romania scored, Kyle Trush (Newport Beach, CA/UC Irvine) came back with two straight goals to put Team USA ahead 8-4 with 2:30 left in the quarter. Romania started to battle back scoring the last two of the period to make it 8-6 after three.

Romania completed the comeback scoring the first two goals of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-8 with 6:38 to play. Alex Obert (Loomis, CA/Pacific) put Team USA back in front 9-8 with 4:16 to go in the game but Romania tied it with 2:46 left in the match. The final chances on offense for both sides were halted and the game moved to a shootout at 9-9. 

In the shootout Obert hit the first shot for Team USA and Romania's first attempt went off the post to put Team USA up one at 10-9. Then Ramirez scored followed by a Romania conversion to make it 11-10. Connor Neumann (Danville, CA/California) converted the next try and Romania went off the post for a 12-10 lead. One more goal from Team USA would seal the deal and Carniglia converted for the 13-10 win.

In regulation Team USA went 5/7 on power plays and 1/2 on penalties while Romania was 1/8 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty. Two Romanian Assistant Coaches were given red cards during the match.
