USA Men Lose To Italy 12-9 At World University Games, Will Play In 9-16 Bracket

Taipei, Taiwan - August 23 - The USA Men's National Team dropped a 12-9 decision to Italy in the quarterfinal qualification round at the World University Games. Luis Araya (Stockton, CA/Pacific) led the offense with three goals while Chris Whitelegge (Costa Mesa, CA/Coastline CC) added 10 saves in net. Team USA now moves on to the 9th-16th place bracket where they will meet Romania in the quarterfinals on Friday at 12am et/9pm pt (August 24). Team USA took the lead early on a goal from Ben Stevenson (Reno, NV/Pacific) to go in front 1-0 a little over a minute into the match. With less than three minutes to play in the period Italy found the equalizer for a 1-1 game after one.

In the second quarter the Italians took control scoring three straight to begin the period to go ahead 4-1 with :49 left in the half. Nolan McConnell (Laguna Beach, CA/Long Beah State) hit on a power play goal with :18 left to make it 4-2 in favor of Italy at halftime.

Offense picked up in the third with each team scoring four goals. Italy looked to be pulling away as they scored the first two of the quarter to go ahead 6-2 with 6:01 to play in the match. Then Araya took over scoring three straight goals in less than two minutes to make it 6-5 with 3:51 to go in the third. Italy scored two of the next three goals and was able to take an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Italy kept up the momentum in the fourth scoring the first two goals of the period to build a 10-6 advantage with 4:23 to play in the game. Austin Stevenson (Fair Oaks, CA/Long Beach State) hit on a power play moments later to make it 10-7 but Italy answered with two straight for a 12-7 lead with 1:47 to play. Two late goals from Team USA wouldn't factor in the decision as Italy look the match 12-9. 

Team USA went 6/11 on power plays and 0/1 on penalty shots while Italy was 2/5 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots.
