USA Men Draw With Russia 11-11 In Second Match At World University Games

Taipei, Taiwan - August 20 - The USA Men's National Team drew with Russia 11-11 in their latest game at the World University Games. Ben Stevenson (Reno, NV/Pacific) scored three goals to lead the offense while Chris Whitelegge (Costa Mesa, CA/Coastline CC) added 7 saves in net. Russia scored to open the match but after Team USA tied the game at 1-1 it was a goal from Nic Carniglia (Lodi, CA/California) that put the United States in front 2-1 with 2:36 to play in the quarter. Russia countered with straight goals but Ben Stevenson scored on the power play with nine seconds left to tie the game at 3-3 after one.

Alex Obert (Loomis, CA/Pacific) and Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, CA/Pepperdine) scored to open the second quarter putting Team USA ahead 5-3. After the teams traded goals the United States again went up two, this time at 7-5 with with 1:48 left in the half thanks to another Ben Stevenson power play goal. Russia found the net one more time with 11 seconds left in the half and Team USA held a 7-6 lead at intermission.

Ben Stevenson scored to open the third pushing the USA lead back to two at 8-6. That was short lived as Russia ran off three straight goals to build a 9-8 lead after three periods. Russia went ahead 10-8 early in the fourth before a Nolan McConnell (Laguna Beach, CA/Long Beach State) goal made it 10-9 with more than six minutes to play. Russia pushed the lead back to two at 11-9 with a little over two minutes to play but the United States made one more surge. Chancellor Ramirez (Pasadena, CA/UCLA) brought the game to 11-10 on a score with 1:19 to play and then tied it on a power play goal with just :29 left in the game. He had one more chance to go for the win after an Obert steal with four seconds to play but it was not to be, the game ended in an 11-11 tie.

Team USA went 5/16 on the power play while Russia was 4/10 with neither side attempting a penalty shot.
