USA Men Take 13th Place At FINA World Championships With 11-8 Win Over France

Nic Carniglia had two goals and McQuin Baron added 11 saves in the win over France

Budapest, Hungary - July 25 - The USA Men's National Team closed out play at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest with an 11-8 win over France to claim 13th place. Luca Cupido (Santa Margherita, Italy/California/Newport) scored three goals to lead the offense with McQuin Baron (North Tustin, CA/USC/Regency) adding 11 saves in net. Team USA finishes the tourney at 3-2 with three straight victories over Russia, South Africa and France. They opened played with consecutive losses to Croatia and Japan. France took control early opening up a 1-0 lead scoring the only goal of the first quarter. They went ahead 2-0 early in the second period before the United States started to rally back. Alex Roelse (Maarssen, Netherlands/UCLA/Bruin) hit on a counter attack and Nic Carniglia (Lodi, CA/California/Davis) followed with a power play goal to even the score at 2-2 with 5:01 left in the half. At around the three minute mark in the first half three different exclusions arrived leaving the United States with a 5-on-4 advantage. Max Irving (Long Beach, CA/UCLA/LA Water Polo) was the benefeciary cashing in close to the cage to give Team USA their first lead of the match at 3-2. France responded some thirty seconds later to even the game and the score was tied at 3-3 at halftime. 

The second half was a back and forth affair as the match was tied on four different occassions. France struck first in the opening minute only to have Alex Bowen (Santee, CA/Stanford/NYAC) respond less than thirty seconds later to even the game at 4-4. Thomas Dunstan (New Canaan, CT/USC/Regency) followed with a goal for a 5-4 lead. France answered with two straight to take the lead back at 6-5. Team USA had a response with consecutive goals from Cupido and Carniglia and the United States took a 7-6 lead to the fourth quarter. 

In the opening minute of the quarter the United States looked to pull away after Cupido converted on a penalty shot for a two goal advantage at 8-6. France countered with two straight goals and the game was tied at 8-8 with 4:22 to play in the match after the power play strike. Team USA would have the last word scoring three unanswered goals to finish off the match. Bowen, Cupido and Irving all found the back of the on the way to the 11-8 victory.

The United States went 2/8 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots with France going 2/7 on the advantage and not attempting a penalty.
