Budapest, Hungary - July 23 - The USA Men's National Team won their second straight match at the FINA World Championships with a 13-4 win over South Africa advancing to the 13th place game. Alex Obert (Loomis, CA/Pacific/NYAC) and Max Irving (Long Beach, CA/UCLA/LA Water Polo) scored three goals each to power the offense. McQuin Baron (North Tustin, CA/USC/Regency) recorded eight saves through three periods with Drew Holland (Orinda, CA/Stanford/Lamorinda) working the fourth quarter and collecting three saves. Team USA will now close out competition in Budapest against France on Tuesday at 4:50am/1:50am pt. Live streaming is expected to be offered via Olympic Channel and available by clicking here

Things started slowly in the first quarter with just one goal scored between both teams as Luca Cupido (Santa Margherita, Italy/California/Newport) connected on a penalty shot score for 1-0 lead. Scoring picked up in the second as Team USA piled up six goals to grab a 7-3 halftime lead. After South Africa tied the game early in the period, the United States ran off four straight goals, two from Irving, to go ahead 5-1. South Africa scored two of the next three but Obert had the last word in the half hitting with just two seconds left to build the four goal advantage.

South Africa drew to within three on a goal to start the third but Team USA responded with three straight goals including one from Nic Carniglia (Lodi, CA/California/Davis) for a 10-4 lead going to the fourth. Team USA closed things out in the fourth by outscoring South Africa 3-0. Alex Roelse (Maarssen, Netherlands/UCLA/Bruin) found the back of the net at the 6:48 mark for an 11-4 lead. Marko Vavic (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Loyola HS/Trojan) followed with a score at the 3:47 mark for a 12-4 lead. Obert finished the match much like he finished the first half scoring with just seconds to play to seal the deal at 13-4.

Team USA went 2/9 on power plays and 2/2 on penalty shots while South Africa was 1/6 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot. Alex Rodriguez served as Head Coach for Team USA after Dejan Udovicic was given a red card in the victory over Russia on July 21. For more information on the FINA World Championships, click here.
