USA Senior Men Start World Championship Tune-Up With 9-7 Loss To Australia

Siracusa, Italy - July 7 - The USA Men's Senior National Team opened play in Sircausa, Italy at a four-day tournament serving as a tune-up to the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Team USA faltered on day one losing to Australia 9-7. Luca Cupido (Santa Margherita, Italy/California/Newport) and Alex Bowen (Santee, CA/Stanford/NYAC) each scored two goals in the loss. Drew Holland (Orinda, CA/Stanford/Lamorinda) and Alex Wolf (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/Bruin) combined for nine saves in net. Team USA takes on Croatia today at 12:00pm et/9:00am pt. Australia took control early opening up a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and a 6-3 lead at halftime. Team USA had to play from behind in the second half trailing 7-4 after three periods. They drew to within two goals in the fourth but couldn't come all the way back falling 9-7.

The United States went just 2/9 on power plays but 2/2 on penalty shots with Australia going 2/4 on the advantage and 1/1 on penalties. After today's match with Croatia, the United States will have a day off tomorrow and then resume play on July 9 against an opponent to be determined.
