June 14, 2013

Chelyabinsk, Russia - June 14 - The USA Men's National Team will play for a medal at the 2013 FINA World League Super Final after edging China 13-11 in a shootout in quarterfinal play. Andy Stevens (Villa Park, CA/LMU/NYAC) came up with a crucial block on the second shooter of the shootout to lead Team USA to victory. The United States had relinquished a three goal lead in the fourth period only to pull out the win in the extra session. Shea Buckner (Villa Park, CA/USC/NYAC) and Michael Rosenthal (Miami, FL/USC/NYAC) each scored twice in regulation to pace the USA offense. The United States now advances to the semifinal round where they will take on Hungary on Saturday at 9:15am est/6:15am pst. It was a close match throughout the first half with the game tied 2-2 after the first period and the United States holding a slight lead, 5-4, at halftime. Buckner scored both of his goals in the first period to lead the United States. In the second Matt De Trane (Moraga, CA/Pepperdine/Waves), Bret Bonanni (Huntington Beach, CA/Stanford/Stanford) and Rosenthal scored the first three goals of the period to build a 5-2 lead but China answered late in the half with two goals with less than 90 seconds to play to cut the deficit going into halftime.

China scored to open the third period tying the game at 5-5, only to see the United States rip off three straight goals to close out the period and grab an 8-5 lead. The advantage was short lived as in the fourth China turned the tables shutting out the United States while adding three goals of their own to even the game at 8-8 and force the shootout.

In the shootout, the United States hit their first two shots, but Stevens halted the second shooter for China, giving the Americans a 10-9 lead. The final shooter for the United States, Tim Hutten (Seal Beach, CA/UC-Irvine/Newport WPF), scored and the game was over with the United States winning 13-11. Stevens' stop was part of a 13 save effort on the day. Team USA went 2/7 on power plays while China was 2/8.
