USA Men Defeat Brazil 13-7; Take First Place At FINA World League Prelims

May 27, 2013

Los Alamitos, CA - May 27 - The USA Men's Senior National Team earned some minor revenge from a shootout loss to Brazil on Saturday evening by winning earlier today 13-7. The victory gave Team USA first place at the FINA World League Prelims as they prepare for the FINA World League Super Final starting on June 11 in Russia. Brandon Johnson scored three goals in the win while Andy Stevens went the distance in net to record the victory.

The United States got off to a great start with goals from Johnson and Michael Rosenthal to grab a 2-0 lead with 4:37 remaining in the first period. Brazil came back to draw within a goal at 2-1 with 4:36 left and that opened a string of the teams trading goals. Team USA went ahead next on a score from Shea Buckner only to see Brazil come back with a goal to make it 3-2. The United States closed out the period strong, scoring two straight goals as Collin Smith and Johnson found the net for a 5-2 advantage.

In the second period the United States started to pull away. Alex Bowen scored less than three minutes into the period to build a 6-2 lead. Brazil kept it close with a goal moments later to draw within 6-3, but the United States scored on the very next possession with a goal from Tommy Corcoran for a 7-3 lead. Brazil again responded with a goal to stay within three at 7-4 but the United States had the last word with a strike from Griffin Lerman with just 19 seconds remaining for an 8-4 lead at halftime.

For all the scoring in the first half, the third period saw both offensive wells run dry. Neither team would muster a goal and the match was remaining 8-4 going to the fourth. The goals returned in the fourth period as the teams traded scores yet again. Brazil closed to within 8-5 with 6:20 left but Team USA answered with a goal from Johnson for a 9-5 lead.  Matt DeTrane heated up in the fourth period as he scored the first of his two goals in the quarter to go up 10-5. That goal more than decided the match. The two teams would trade goals to close out the match starting at the 2:36 mark and when the dust settled the United States came away winners 13-7.
