Alex Bowen scored five times in the loss to Brazil

May 25, 2013

Los Alamitos, CA - May 25 - The USA Men's National Team lost a heartbreaker to Brazil, 13-12, in a shootout, on day two of the FINA World League Prelims. Brazil battled back from a three goal deficit in the third period to force a tie after regulation and a shootout. Marcelo Chagas stopped the final two USA shooters in the shootout to earn the victory and send the USA Men to their first loss of the prelims.

Team USA opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period on consecutive goals from Alex Bowen. Brazil answered with two straight goals only to see Team USA tack on two more of their own from Shea Buckner and Tommy Corcoran for a 4-2 lead after the first.  In the second period Bowen started things off with his third goal of the night for a 5-2 lead. Brazil responded with two straight goals to draw within 5-4 with 3:16 to play.  Collin Smith scored next for Team USA and the Americans went back up by two, 6-4, going into intermission.

Early in the third it looked as if the United States would blow things open when Jeffrey Schwimer snuck one past the keeper after an ordinary foul, to build a 7-4 lead. Instead of wilting, Brazil responded with three straight goals and evened the game at 7-7 with 7:07 to go in the fourth period. Bowen answered the call for the United States with another goal and an 8-7 lead with 6:41 to play. The match would see-saw back and forth as Brazil tied the match at 8-8 on a score from Marcelo Franco. Brandon Johnson beat the keeper on the nearside for another USA lead, this time at 9-8 with 3:17 left. Brazil battled back once more and Gabriel Rocha scored out of two meters for a 9-9 game with 2:08 left in the match.

The two teams would trade opportunities down the stretch but neither side could muster a goal as time expired on regulation. That led to the shootout where both sides scored on their first three goals with Bowen, Johnson, and Smith connecting for Team USA. Their fourth shooter Griffin Lerman was stopped by Chagas. After Brazil connected on their next shot, the United States was down to their final shooter and Michael Rosenthal's attempt was halted by Chagas to end the match.

The USA Men are back in action on Monday morning when they meet Canada at 8pm pst.
