USA Junior Men Take Eighth Place At FINA Junior World Championship After 14-8 Loss To Italy

The USA Men's Junior National Team took 8th place at the Junior World Championship

Belgrade, Serbia - August 13 - The USA Men's Junior National Team took home eighth place at the FINA Junior World Championship following a 14-8 loss to Italy. Hannes Daube and Ash Molthen scored three goals each to lead the offense with Alex Wolf recording three saves in net. Italy scored first but Team USA found the equalizer moments later on a Molthen score with 4:49 left in the opening period. Italy followed with the next two goals for a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Daube opened the second quarter with a goal to bring the game to within one at 3-2. Italy scored three of the next four goals to go ahead 6-3 at halftime. 

The match was decided in the third quarter when Italy outscored Team USA 6-1 to surge ahead 12-4 after three quarters. Johnny Hooper scored the first goal of the fourth quarter as the United States tried to rally but couldn't muster another goal until later in the period. Italy answered with a score to take a 13-5 lead with 3:24 left. Team USA scored three of the next four goals with less than two minutes to play but it didn't affect the outcome as Italy the match by six. 

Team USA went 4/14 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot while Italy was 5/11 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots. The United States finished play in Serbia with a 4-4 record defeating Russia, Puerto Rico, Iran and Canada while suffering losses to Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Italy.
