USA Junior Men Defeat Russia 12-9 To Start Junior World Championships

Belgrade, Serbia - August 6 - The USA Men's Junior National Team defeated Russia 12-9 to begin play at the FINA Men's Junior World Championship. A lightning storm drove the competition indoors in Serbia for the final game of the day as Johnny Hooper scored six goals to pace the Team USA attack. Alex Wolf added 10 saves in net in the victory. Hooper scored in the opening twenty seconds to put Team USA ahead 1-0 before Russia tied the match moments later at 1-1. Tyler Abramson followed scoring two goals on the day in the first period to leave the United States ahead 3-2 after eight minutes. Dylan Woodhead scored to start the second quarter and by halftime the United States was ahead 6-4.

Russia scored two of the first three goals in the third quarter to close the gap to a goal at 7-6 with 3:47 left in the period. The United States countered with a strong finish to the period as Hooper scored twice followed by a tally from Ash Molthen with less than a minute to play for 10-6 advantage after three. Hannes Daube scored the first goal of the fourth to make it 11-6 but Russia rallied with three straight to make it 11-9 with less than a minute to play. Jacob Cavano added one final goal and Team USA took the match 12-9. 

The United States went 2/4 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties while Russia was 3/5 on power plays and 2/2 on penalties.
