Long Beach, CA - September 9 - Often a destination for drinks and snacks during their lead up to the 2008 Olympic Games, the Women's Olympic Water Polo team returned to Grounds Bakery and Cafe in Long Beach, CA to meet with staff members and the bakery patrons who cheered the team from the home front as they earned a Silver Medal in Beijing, China.
Team captain Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) was joined by Patty Cardenas (Commerce, CA), Alison Gregorka (Ann Arbor, MI), Jessica Steffens (Danville, CA) and Natalie Golda (Fullerton, CA). The athletes chatted with fans, signed autographs, and posed for pictures as some 200 people turned out for the festivities. The bakery was especially important to the team as they started a campaign earlier this year where customers could leave notes of encouragement for the team as they prepared for the Olympics in nearby Los Alamitos, CA. The entire team were given proclamations from members of the Long Beach City Council and congratulated on a job well done in bringing back yet another medal for women's water polo to the United States.
Next on the horizon for the Olympic Team will be the 2008 Speedo Top 40 taking place at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos, CA from October 24-26. Members of the squad will join forces to help bring together 40 of the most elite female water polo players in the country.
