USA Men & Women To Play For Gold At Pan American Games; Berth To 2012 Olympic Games

Guadalajara, Mexico - October 28 - The USA Water Polo Men's and Women's National Teams will play for the Gold Medal at the 2011 Pan American Games. A victory for each will earn a berth to the 2012 Olympic Games held next summer in London, England. The USA Women are up first taking on Canada tonight at 5pm cst/3pm pst with the USA Men following tomorrow (October 29) against Canada at 5pm cst/3pm pst. Both USA teams are the defending Gold Medalists at the Pan American Games with the USA Men having won every edition since 1995 and the USA Women victorious in both 2003 and 2007. Should either team take Silver at the Pan American Games their next and last chance to qualify for the Olympic Games will come at the Olympic Qualification Tournament in April 2012 held in Canada for the men and Italy for the women.

The USA Women are currently 4-0 in Pan American Games competition winning every match by double figures defeating Argentina 20-0, Puerto Rico 24-4, Cuba 19-3, and Brazil 13-1 in the semifinals. The USA Men have likewise rolled up a 4-0 record defeating Venezuela 16-3, Brazil 8-5, Argentina 13-7, and Cuba 12-2 in the semifinals.
