Trieste, Italy - The USA Women's Junior National Team lost to Hungary 9-8 in overtime in the quarterfinal round of the FINA Junior World Championships. Kiley Neushul led the offense with two goals while Sami Hill tallied 15 saves. Team USA will now play for fifth place at best and will meet Italy tomorrow in the 5th-9th place bracket.
The United States started off strong leading 1-0 after the first quarter and 5-3 at halftime. Hungary battled back to tie the match in the third quarter outscoring the United States 2-0 to even the score at 5-5. It was a see-saw battle in the fourth quarter with the United States going up 7-5 at one point before Hungary rallied. The Hungarians would score three straight goals to go up 8-5 before the United States answered with a score with just 13.5 seconds left to force over time. Both teams were scoreless in the first overtime period and Hungary came through with the winning goal in the second session to take the match 9-8.
Other scorers for the United States included Brooke Martin, Emily Greenwood, Kelly Mendoza, Colleen O'Donnell, Rachel Fattal, and Dominique Sardo who all scored once. The United States struggled mightily on their power play going 2/16 while Hungary was 2/7 and 1/1 on penalty shots. "This is a disappointing outcome, we needed to convert our six on five opportunities and it just didn't happen," said USA Head Coach Heather Moody.
