USA World University Games Men's Team Will Play For Bronze After 11-10 Loss To Russia

Shenzhen, China - August 21 - The USA Men's World University Games Team will play for the Bronze Medal at the World University Games following an 11-10 loss to Russia. Team USA rallied back from a five goal deficit but was unable to complete the comeback falling by a goal. Janson Wigo scored four times and Andy Stevens and Chay Lapin combined for 12 saves in the cage. Team USA will meet Macedonia on Tuesday for the Bronze Medal.

The match was tight early with the two squads tied 1-1 after the first period. In the second quarter Russia opened it up outscoring the United States 6-3 to go up 7-4 at halftime. They went up 9-4 in the third before the United States started to chip away and the third quarter ended at 10-7 in favor of Russia. In the fourth the United States scored three straight times to tie the match at 10-10 but a late power play goal by Russia sealed the match and the game went to Russia 11-10.

Other scorers for the United States included JP MacDonnell with two goals and a goal apiece for Griffin Lerman, Greg Enloe, Matt Sagehorn, and Drac Wigo. Andy Stevens stopped seven shots while Chay Lapin tallied five saves including a penalty shot stop. The United States went 5/10 on power plays and 2/2 on penalty shots while Russia went 4/7 on power plays and 1/2 on penalty shots.

"We found ourselves in a hole down 9-4 with 7 minutes left in the third. It was a great team effort to reel them back into the game to tie it 10-10 late in the fourth.  Russia hit a late 6 on 5 that proved to be the winner. I'm very proud of this team, and look forward to going after Bronze vs. Macedonia on Tuesday," said USA Head Coach Marc Hunt.
