Men's World University Games Team Moves On To Semifinals With 10-9 Overtime Win Over Spain

Shenzhen, China - August 19 - A goal by Drac Wigo with just four seconds left in overtime sealed a 10-9 victory for the USA Men over Spain to advance to the semifinals of the World University Games. Team USA will take on Russia on Sunday. Janson Wigo scored three goals and Chay Lapin recorded 19 saves including a penalty shot block in the victory.
The two squads were about as evenly matched as possible as the game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter, 5-5 at halftime, 6-6 after the third quarter and 8-8 at the end of the regulation. The tie after regulation led to overtime consisting of two periods. Spain took a 9-8 lead at the end of the first overtime period but the United States was able to battle back to tie it at 9-9 in the second overtime period. That gave way to the final moments where Jeffrey Schwimer drew an exclusion setting up a power play with four seconds left where Wigo notched the game winner. The United States came away one goal winners at 10-9.
Other scorers for the United States included two goals for Sage Wright, Matt Sagehorn and JP MacDonnell. Team USA went 7/14 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots while Spain went 3/9 on power plays and 0/1 on penalty shots.
"Our team defense on our 5x6 put us in position to win. Great team effort with converting 7 for 14 on 6x5. I was especially pleased with our 2 meter defending with Griffin Lerman and our goal play with Chay Lapin," said USA Head Marc Hunt.
