Shenzhen, China - August 11 - The USA Men's World University Games Team made short work of Singapore winning 17-0 to open competition at the World University Games. Janson Wigo, JP MacDonnell, and Sage Wright all scored three times in the victory. Chay Lapin and Andy Stevens split time in the cage stopping 15 shots. The squad is back in action on Friday with a game against Serbia.
The match was never in doubt as the United States went up 4-0 after the first quarter and 8-0 at halftime. From there the game was in cruise control as the team worked their way to a commanding victory that saw eight different players score goals. Team USA went 1/3 on power plays while Singapore was 0/6. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.
"This is a great start to our trip and tournament. With such a strong emphasis on defense in our game plan, we were pleased to end the game in a shut out. We look forward to our upcoming bracket games with Serbia and France," said Boyd LaChance, USA Assistant Coach.
"(A) great start to the tournament, we can expect a more physical game against Serbia... but we are ready for it," said Team USA's Drac Wigo. "It was a great team win for us today, got a few of the kinks out. For a lot of us, it was the first time wearing the red, white and blue. We really showed our preparation, I think as the tournament goes on the team that is most prepared will be victorious," said USA Goalie Andy Stevens.
