New York Athletic Club Wins Gold At Men's US Open Of Water Polo

Costa Mesa, CA - August 8 - The New York Athletic Club took home the Gold Medal at the 2011 Men's US Open Of Water Polo with an 11-7 win over the Olympic Club. NYAC goalie Merrill Moses took home the Chuck Metz Award as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In the third place game it was the World University Games team defeating Bruin 8-4 to take the Bronze Medal and complete a strong warm up for competition at the World University Games starting later this week.
New York cruised to the title game in their repeat as champions, save for one close match with the World University Games squad that ended with a 12-10 win for New York. Olympic Club also progressed to the title match without a loss but was nearly topped by Trojan in the early rounds escaping 9-8. In the fifth place match Pacific defeat Lamorinda 7-5 while seventh place saw Trojan top Stanford 6-4. A match of "B" teams decided ninth place with NYAC "B" defeating Lamorinda "B" for ninth place and in 11th place Newport Water Polo edged Santa Barbara 11-10. 13th place went to Sharks with a 13-7 win over Davis and 15th place was a Navy matchup with Navy "B" defeating Navy "A" 12-11.
