Day 1 of Women's U.S. Open of Water Polo in the books

Moraga, CA - July 22 - Play began in the Women's US Open today, where 16 of the top club teams competed at both Acalanes High School and Miramonte High School. Top seeded LAWP earned two victories on the day at Acalanes HS. In the first game, LAWP rolled to a big victory over Marin 15-3, and in the second won a tightly contested match against CHAWP 10-8. CHAWP finished day one with a 1-1 record.In game three at Acalanes HS, top seed NYAC (A) took on American River WPC. During a hard fought first half, NYAC (A) held a slim 6-3 lead going into the second half. However, NYAC's experience proved too much for ARWPC as they pulled away in the second half for an easy 17-4 victory. NAYC (A) was also victorious in their second game, as they defeated OClub 17-6. (NYAC 2-0, OClub 1-1)

In what turned out to be the game of the day at Miramonte HS, Davis overcame an early Cal lead to win on a last second buzzer beater by Jessica Dunn. After Cal jumped out to an early lead, the two teams went back and forth for the rest of the match. In addition to her game winning goal, Jessica Dunn tallied the last four Davis goals on her way to six goals for the game. Cal game back strong and defeated Mex National 11-3. (Cal 1-1, Mex 0-2)Later on in the day, Davis faced SoCal in another close match. SoCal led Davis the entire game; and Davis made a surge in the fourth quarter coming within one goal with just 20 seconds left in the match. SoCal was able to hang on to the last possession to win 13-12. (SoCal 2-0, Davis 1-1) In other action at Miramonte HS, top seeded Stanford cruised to two victories defeating NYAC B 11-7 and SC Valley 13- 2.  (NYAC B 1-1, SC Valley 1-1)Santa Barbara earned two wins on the day taking on OClub 9-6,  as well as American River 12-7. (American River 0-2)
