3rd Annual Fisher Cup Set For May 21-22 At UC-San Diego

Huntington Beach, Calif. – May 6, 2011 – 16 of the elite men’s water polo clubs in the United States boasting a variety of Olympians and National Team athletes will converge upon San Diego, California this May 21-22 for the third annual Fisher Cup. The University of California-San Diego’s Canyonview Pool plays host to the invitational that welcomes the likes of defending champion The Olympic Club, alongside the New York Athletic Club, the Newport Water Polo Foundation, Los Angeles Water Polo Club and new in 2011, the USA Water Polo Men’s Junior National Team.
“The Fisher Cup is a great opportunity for our National Team Players to play for their clubs. It is a highly competitive tournament where the coaching staff can evaluate all players in a different environment while fans get a chance to see some high level water polo,” said Terry Schroeder, USA Men’s National Team Head Coach.
The full field includes Bruin, Gauchos, LA Water Polo, Lamorinda A, Lamorinda B, Long Beach, USA Men's Junior National Team, Newport WPF A, Newport WPF B, New York Athletic Club, Olympic Club, Stanford, Sunset, Tigers, Trojan, and Waves.
The Fisher Cup is named in honor of the late Donald G. Fisher, founder and chairman emeritus of Gap Inc., and an outstanding water polo player and swimmer at the University of California. Fisher had long been a business visionary, a community leader and philanthropist. He served on the board of trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is a director of the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco and a governor of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Fisher was director of EdVoice, KIPP Charter Public Schools, and Teach for America. He was also a member of the California State Board of Education.
The recipient of Presidential appointments to the Advisory Council for U.S. Trade Representatives, Fisher was named to the Presidio Trust board of directors by President Clinton in 1997 and President Bush in 2001. He had served on Princeton University’s Board of Trustees for eight years. Other honors include the California Arts Council Governor’s Award for Individual Patrons of the Arts and selection to the Bay Area Business Hall of Fame and American Academy of Achievement. Mr. Fisher passed away in September of 2009.
