4/13/2011 12:00:00 AM
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. --
The top teams in the nation remain the same as Stanford University
and Occidental College held onto their No. 1 preseason national
rankings for the 12th week in a row to top the Women's Varsity Top
20 and Division III Top 10 polls released today by the Collegiate
Water Polo Association. In the CWPA polls, defending
conference champion the University of Michigan continues at No. 1
in the league's Division I poll, while Carthage College takes over
in the top spot in the Division III rankings.
Voted on by a panel of coaches and
administrators from around the country during the preseason and
each week of the season based on the cumulative results of each
team, the Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water
Polo Association Top 10 polls are released on Wednesday during the
season until the week following the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) Championship.
Women's Varsity Top
20
Stanford University remains a unanimous selection
at No. 1 in the nation as the Cardinal garnered 100 points to
remain unchallenged in the April 13 Women's Varsity Top 20
Poll.
Ranked No. 1 in the preseason (98
points), and the first two polls of the regular season (99 points),
the Cardinal clinched a unanimous spot on top of the poll nine
weeks ago and remain the consensus pick as the top program in the
nation.
The first 11 positions in the poll
remain consistent bar the No. 4 University of
California-Los Angeles Bruins moving up to No. 3 following
a victory over the formerly No. 3 ranked Trojans of the
University of Southern California.
Positions No. 12-20 underwent radical changes as
Hartwick College improves two places to take over
at No. 12 and drop Indiana Univeristy back to No.
13.
California State University-Northridge and the
University of California-Davis also improve two
places by jumping up to No. 14 and 15, respectively, with the
University of California-Santa Barbara sliding
back to No. 16.
Princeton University and University of
the Pacific both move up to tie at No. 17, with
Long Beach State University and the
University of California-San Diego rounding out
the Top 20.

Women's Varsity Division III
Top 10
Occidental College retains its position
as the No. 1 small college team in the nation in the April 13
Women's Varsity Division III Poll.
Occidental, which has held the No.
1 ranking since the preseason poll, continues to remain in
front of the University of Redlands but saw its
lead dwindle to only three points this week.
Behind Occidental and Redlands,
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and
Whittier College remain steady at No. 3 and 4.
California Lutheran
University, which was tied with Pomona-Pitzer
Colleges at No. 5 last week, assumes sole possession of
the ranking in this week's balloting as Pomona-Pitzer drops back to
No. 6.
The biggest surprise of the week is
Carthage College which climbs three places to tie
Chapman University at No. 7 on the strength of a
victory over Grove City College during the
weekend.
Grove City drops back to No. 9,
while the University of La Verne completing
the poll at No. 10.

Women's Varsity CWPA Division
III Top 5
For the first time this season, a
team other than Grove City College reigns in the
CWPA Division III Poll as Carthage College climbs
to No. 1 in the April 13 Poll.
The Lady Reds, who defeated Grove
City over the weekend by a 10-7 score, avenged an 8-7 loss to the
Wolverines in last year's CWPA Division III Eastern
Championship.
Carthage's ranking marks the first
time since Washington & Jefferson College
rated at No. 1 in the March 3, 2010 poll that a team other than
Grove City holds the top spot in the CWPA Division III poll.
Wheaton College
jumps to No. 3 this week, with W&J and Chatham
University rounding out the Top Five.
