Huntington Beach, Calif. – April 4, 2011 – The USA Water Polo Open Division National Championships have been renamed the US Open of Water Polo effective immediately, and in time for the upcoming 2011 summer competition season. The US Open of Water Polo, featuring some of the top talent America has to offer, will feature women competing July 22-24, 2011 and the men August 5-7, 2011. The women will compete at the SODA Aquatics Center in Moraga, California while the men will play in Orange County, California at a location to be determined.
The US Open of Water Polo will continue as its predecessor with no cap on age for competing athletes. The tournament rebranding comes on the heels of change to the SwimOutlet.com Junior Olympics. With the newly repositioned 21 and Under divisions now being contested under the Junior Olympics umbrella, this creates an enticing lead-up to the Junior Olympics for water polo fans nationwide.
“This rebranding provides us with a great opportunity to re-energize what is truly one of the highlights of our Summer championship season,” said Scott Tanner, Director of Sport Development for USA Water Polo. “The talent level at the US Open is always top notch and we intend to do extensive promotion of these events so all water polo fans will have the opportunity to see world class play right in their own back yard.”
Annually, the USA Water Polo Open Division National Championships were a showcase for Olympians, established college players, and exciting rising stars, a tradition that will continue with the US Open of Water Polo. For years, the event, which has been contested all over the United States, has served as a marker of the true elite clubs in the USA Water Polo system. In 2010 the New York Athletic Club claimed the Gold Medal boasting three-time Olympian Tony Azevedo alongside Hungarian all-star Tamas Kasas. Meanwhile, the women of Los Angeles Water Polo used a college-aged juggernaut to blitz the field for Gold. Year in and year out the future of Team USA and the NCAA Championships hone their skills at this annual flagship event, and 2011 will be no different.
Entry information will be available in the coming months followed by schedules and rosters all available at www.usawaterpolo.org. Be sure to check back with www.usawaterpolo.org for the most up to date information on the US Open of Water Polo.
