Huntington Beach, Calif. – November 1, 2010 – Stemilt Growers, a Washington state-based tree-fruit producer has entered into a partnership with USA Water Polo to serve as the Official Fresh Fruit sponsor of the National Governing Body through August of 2011.

Beginning in January 2011, Stemilt will feature select members of the USA Men’s and Women’s National Teams on their in-store displays at retailers across the country, and leverage healthy lifestyle content provided by USA Water Polo. The agreement also provides fresh fruits such as apples, pears, cherries, and stone fruits to the USA Water Polo National Teams, Olympic Development program, and participants in the 8th Annual USA Water Polo Golf Tournament set for December 17 in Mission Viejo, CA.

USA Water Polo will feature Stemilt across a variety of platforms including informational placements in monthly e-newsletters, event programs, SkipShot magazine, Facebook, and Twitter, where the company will be recognized as the official fruit sponsor.

One of the top water polo nations in the world, with a World Cup crown for the Women’s National Team and a top five finish for the Men’s National Team this past summer, USA Water Polo and Stemilt join forces through the FINA World Championships scheduled for Shanghai in the summer of 2011.

“Fresh fruits like apples, pears, cherries, and other stone fruits are key components to a healthy and well-balanced diet. We are excited to help Stemilt spread the word about their fruit and present a healthy nutritional message to USA Water Polo members and those in the water polo community,” said USA Water Polo Chief Marketing Officer Jennifer Rottenberg.

“Since an athlete’s diet should be composed of mostly carbohydrates (somewhere between 50-60 percent), fruit offers one of the best sources. The natural sugars in ripe, seasonal fruits are one of the best energy providers for the elite athlete. What I love about fresh fruit is the additional goodness it gives my athletes like essential vitamins, antioxidants and fiber…all the things a body needs to build its immune system and fight disease. Not to mention, they come in nature’s own packaging and are easy to eat when you are on the go.” said Dr. Marcia Whalen, USA Water Polo’s Team Physician.

“Partnering with USA Water Polo is a natural fit for Stemilt. These talented athletes know that a healthy lifestyle is key to being able to perform at such a high level each day. Apples, pears, cherries, and other fruits are not only a part of a healthy lifestyle, but can also assist with weight loss and ward off many chronic diseases. We are excited to bring USA Water Polo into our promotions in order to continue raising awareness about Stemilt fruits,” said Stemilt marketing director, Roger Pepperl.

Stemilt’s company roots trace back to 1893 when the Mathison family homesteaded 160 acres on Stemilt Hill, a region that overlooks the Columbia River and town of Wenatchee, Washington. By 1914, the family had planted their first apple, cherry, and pear orchards atop the Hill, where high-elevation microclimates offered superior growing conditions for tree fruits.

Stemilt was founded in 1964 by Tom Mathison, a third generation farmer and tree fruit industry pioneer. His goal was to provide consumers worldwide year-round access to fruit of the highest quality. Today, the Mathison family continues to own and operate Stemilt, with Tom’s grandson, West Mathison, serving as the president of the company. Stemilt carries on the traditions that Tom began, while innovating at all levels in order to fulfill its mission of “maximizing long-term return to the land by building consumer demand.”
