New York Athletic Club Defends Top 40 Crown With 15-8 Defeat Of Socal

Long Beach, CA - October 24 - The New York Athletic Club remained champions of the Top 40 following a 15-8 defeat of SoCal in the championship game of the 2010 edition. Behind three goals from tourney MVP Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA/NYAC) and stellar defense from the tourney's top goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/NYAC) New York was able to pull away from SoCal late in the second quarter and work their way to a victory.

NYAC had a balanced attack with Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA/NYAC), Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/NYAC), Kelly Rulon (Point Loma, CA/NYAC), Anne Belden (Newport Beach, CA/NYAC), and Juliet Moss (San Jose, CA/NYAC) all chipping in with two goals as well. Emily Feher (Santa Ana, CA/NYAC) played the second half in cage for New York holding SoCal to four goals. New York opened with a 4-1 lead only to see SoCal draw to within 5-3 midway through the second quarter. New York survived that rally and expanded their lead again getting out to a 9-4 lead at halftime. From there they were able to keep SoCal from drawing any closer than five goals as they came away with the championship victory.

SoCal was paced by two goals from Forel Davies (Carlsbad, CA/SoCal) as well as two scores each from Rachel Fattall and Brooke Learmouth. In the third place matchup Santa Barbara rolled to a win over Huntington Beach 11-3 behind four goals from Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara). SET toppled the Olympic Club for fifth place in thrilling fashion 14-12 in a shootout. Seventh place saw LA Water Polo over CHAWP 13-8 while Irvine Kahuna defeated San Diego Shores 13-7 for ninth place.

In 11th place XTreme paced by the tourney's leading scorer Julia Kirkland with 18 goals defeated Commerce 13-11. In 13th place it was Foothill as they dispatched of Colorado 14-5 while rounding things out the NSD Stars edged Rose Bowl 11-10 for 15th place. For full tournament results click here.
