USC Stays At Number One In Top 20 Poll; UC-Irvine Moves To Fifth

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remain at No. 1 in the nation as the Trojans and Sagehens top the Week 4/September 29 Men's Varsity Top 20 and Division III Top 10 polls released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

In the CWPA Top 10 Poll, St. Francis College (N.Y.) held onto the No. 1 ranking in the conference for another week.

Voted on by a panel of coaches and administrators from around the country during the preseason and each week of the season based on the cumulative results of each team, the Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 polls are released on Wednesday during the season until the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

Men's Varsity Top 20

The top four teams in the nation remain unchanged as the University of Southern California, University of California-Los Angeles, University of California-Berkeley and Stanford University held onto their positions at No. 1-4, respectively, in the Week 4/September 22 Men's Varsity Top 20 Poll.

The Trojans, Bruins, Golden Bears and Cardinal lead a Top 10 which experienced only one change as the University of California-Irvine moved in front of the University of California-Santa Barbara as the two institutions exchanged positions at No. 5 and 6 from the September 22 balloting.

University of the Pacific, Long Beach State University, Pepperdine University and Loyola Marymount University  remain locked at No. 7-10, respectivley, while the University of California-Davis and St. Francis College (N.Y.) held on at No. 11 and 12.

The University of California-San Diego, Santa Clara University, California Baptist University and Princeton University all moved up one place to No. 13-16, while formerly No. 12-ranked Concordia University (Calif.) drops back to No. 17.

The United States Naval Academy, Brown University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges round out the Top 20 at No. 18-20, with thte United States Air Force Academy, Johns Hopkins University, Whittier College and Bucknell University receiving votes.

Men's Varsity Division III Top 10

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges picked up 100 points to become a unanimous No. 1 selection in the Week 4/September 29 Men's Varsity Division III Top 10 poll.

The Sagehens, who replaced the University of Redlands in the standings  as the No. 1 team last week, expanded their lead to six points over the Bulldogs (100-to-94), while Whittier College moved up to No. 3.

Johns Hopkins University and  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Chapman University, California Lutheran University, Occidental College and the University of La Verne completing the Top 10.

Washington & Jefferson College finishes off the rankings as the Presidents received 11 points to miss out on cracking the Top 10.

Men's CWPA Top 10

St. Francis College (N.Y.) continue its undefeated season as the Terriers moved to 12-0 on the season to retain their position as the No. 1 team in the Week 4/September 29 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Men's Varsity Division III Top 10 poll.

 

Princeton University, Brown University, the United States Naval Academy and Johns Hopkins University rank No. 2-5, respectively. 

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and George Washington University are tied for sixth, while Fordham University and Bucknell University are tied for eighth to account for the No. 6-9 positions in the poll.

Mercyhurst College completes the Top 10, with Queens College (N.Y.) and Iona College receiving votes.
