Huntington Beach, Calif. – September 29, 2010 –The Top 40 returns in 2010 set for October 23-24 at California State University, Long Beach in Long Beach, California. This year’s edition brings 16 of the best clubs in the land competing on two courses at Long Beach State’s 49er Pool. One change in 2010 sees the “Top 40” athlete component removed due to NCAA rules and regulations and in an effort to stay in compliance with National Team selection procedures.

Competition and training featuring the Top 40 athletes will be moved to a to be determined time following the conclusion of the Women’s NCAA water polo season. Despite the loss of the “Top 40” component, the club tournament which has become a staple on the fall calendar for USA Water Polo will remain and continue to feature top level club water polo action.

This year 16 of the top clubs in the nation will compete for the Top 40 title. Defending champion the New York Athletic Club returns flanked by Irvine Kahuna Water Polo Club, San Diego Shores, Rose Bowl, CHAWP, Colorado WP, Commerce, Foothill, Huntington Beach WPC, Los Angeles Water Polo Club, NSD Stars, Santa Barbara WPF, SoCal, XTreme, Olympic Club, and SET.

Joining the clubs will be members of the Women’s Senior National Team. A variety of members of the Gold Medal winning teams from the FINA World League Super Final and FINA World Cup will be in competition with club rosters to be announced at a later date.

“Although the format may be a bit different, I'm excited to see all of our National Team athletes play and compete against one another and other future stars for Team USA. If anything, the elimination of the 4 separate teams allows the athletes to put more of their focus and energy on the games with their clubs which should make the competition even fiercer,” said USA Women’s National Team Head Coach Adam Krikorian.

In addition to the open division clubs competing a 14 & U Champions Cup exhibition match will be held featuring teams from the Pacific Southwest and Coastal Zones. This matchup will serve as a warm-up for the upcoming 14 & U Champions Cup, formerly the Speedo Cup, scheduled for November 12-14 in Shenandoah, Texas.
