Huntington Beach, Calif. – September 20, 2010 – 2004 Olympian Brett Ormsby and veteran water polo coach Kim Everist have been tabbed to guide the Men’s and Women’s Cadet National Teams. Ormsby will lead the men and Everist the women, while both will retain their positions as Men’s Youth National Team Assistant Coach and ODP Girl’s National Technical Director respectively.
"I look forward to the opportunity to serve as a head coach in the Men's National Team program. I have been through the pipeline as an athlete, and currently serve as an assistant coach at the Youth level, so I hope that I can draw on my experiences to help get these kids started on the right path to having very successful water polo careers,” said Ormsby.
“It's a great honor to be put in a position to coach a USA National Team. I am very excited that I have been given this opportunity and look forward to my new role and the journey it will present,” added Everist.
Ormsby, a UCLA graduate was a 2004 Olympian in Athens and competed with the Men’s Senior National Team through 2007. He was selected the 2004 NCAA player of year after leading UCLA to the 2004 NCAA Championship. Ormsby currently directs the Del Mar water polo club in San Diego along with his role as Assistant Coach of the Men’s Youth National Team.
Everist is currently the Head Coach of women’s water polo at Campolindo High School in Walnut Creek, California. Everist has been a part of the USA Women’s National Teams program since 2001, serving as Assistant Coach for the USA Women’s Junior National Team 2004-2009. She was an Assistant Coach for the Youth National Team 2002-03 and the Junior National Team Leader in 2001 while being part of three Junior National Teams that have won medals at the Junior World Championships 2001 (gold), 2005 (gold) and 2009 (bronze). She was also the interim Head Coach for the Junior National B Team at the 2010 UANA Junior Pan American Championships, leading her young team to a silver medal.
“I am thrilled to have both Kim and Brett now serving as Head Coaches in their respective National Teams Pipeline. Both are excellent coaches and more importantly excellent teachers. I was fortunate work with Brett at the 2009 Holiday Camp and the 2010 Youth National Team Training and Selection and each time I was very impressed with his ability to teach and lead. Brett has the unique ability of taking his knowledge and experience as a player and being able to teach and share that knowledge and experience as a coach to the players. Kim and I have worked together since 2001 and she is dialed in with the connection between ODP, the National Teams Pipeline and the Senior National Team. Kim did one of the best coaching jobs I have seen at the UANA Junior Pan American Championships. Both are great additions to our National Teams Pipeline staff,” said Guy Baker, Director of ODP.
The Cadet National Team Head Coach will oversee the National Teams for athletes 15 years old and younger and 14 years old and younger. ODP has changed to a grade level category system, (11th Grade and under, 9th grade and 8th grade and under), and has expanded to younger age groups. ODP serves as the feeder system for the age group National Teams with ODP athletes placed with their appropriate National Team based on their born in year. The Cadet National Team will be focused on the 9th and 8th grade ODP athletes, coaches and referees. The Cadet National Team will attend their respective ODP 9th and 8th grade Regional Championships to select athletes for the 15u (Born in 1996 and under) and 14u (Born in 1997 and under) National Training and Selection Camp. The Cadet National Team Head Coach will also oversee the Cadet National Development Team.
