Cal Bears Stay Strong At Number One In Men's Varsity Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California and the University of Redlands remain at No. 1 in the nation as the Golden Bears and Bulldogs topped the Week 2/September 15 Men's Varsity Top 20 and Division III Top 10 polls released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

In the CWPA Top 10 Poll, St. Francis College (N.Y.) recorded a 10-8 victory over formerly No. 1 ranked the United States Naval Academy to take possession of the No. 1 ranking in the conference.

Voted on by a panel of coaches and administrators from around the country during the preseason and each week of the season based on the cumulative results of each team, the Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 polls are released on Wednesday during the season until the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

Men's Varsity Top 20

The University of California continued its dominance in the national polls as the Golden Bears garnered 100 points to rank as a unanimous No. 1 selection for another week in the Week 2/September 15 Men's Varsity National Top 20.

California, which  garnered 95 points to edge out the University of California-Los Angeles by a single point (95-to-94) in the preseason rankings, saw its lead over the Bruins dwindle to only five points this week as UCLA remains at No. 2 with 95 points.

The only change in the Top 12 occurs at No. 3 and 4 as the University of Southern CaliforniaStanford University for third place in the poll. picked up two points this week to edge out

The University of California-Irvine, University of California-Santa Barbara, University of the Pacific, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University and Long Beach State University round out the Top 10 for another week, with the University of California-San Diego and Concordia University maintaining their positions at No. 11-12, respectively.

Positions No. 13-20 experienced radical changes as St. Francis College (N.Y.) climbed three positions to take over at No. 13, while California Baptist University jumped to No. 14 after ranking 17th a week ago.

At No. 15, the University of California-Davis held on for another week, while the United States Naval Academy slipped to No. 16. Princeton University, which upset formerly No. 13 ranked Santa Clara University 11-8 over the weekend, moves up to No. 17 with Santa Clara dropping back to No. 18. 

The United States Air Force Academy and Bucknell University round round out the Top 20 once again, with Brown University and University of Redlands receiving votes.

Men's Varsity Division III Top 10

The University of Redlands picked up 99 points to hold onto the No. 1 spot in the Week 2/September 15 Men's Varsity Division III Top 10 poll.

The Bulldogs expanded their margin over runnner-up Pomona-Pitzer Colleges to four points (99-to-95), a three point increase over last week's 97-to-96 spread, while Johns Hopkins University, Whittier College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges round out the Top Five.

Chapman University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology California Lutheran University, University of La Verne and Occidental College finish the Top 10, with Washington & Jefferson College receiving votes.

Men's Varsity Division III Top 10

There is a new team on top of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 conference rankings as St. Francis College (N.Y.) used a 10-8 victory over previously No. 1 ranked the United States Naval Academy to garner 98 points and rank at No. 1 in the conference poll this week. 

Navy (94 points) slips back to No. 2, with Princeton Univeristy (92 points) falling back to No. 3. 

The biggest mover of the week was Bucknell University which improved four positions to take over at No. 4, while Brown University and Fordham University rating at No. 5 and 6, respectively.

Johns Hopkins University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, George Washington University and Queens College (N.Y.) complete the Top 10, with Harvard University, Iona College and Mercyhurst College all receiving votes.
