Hungary Defeats USA Senior Men 12-11 To End Eight Nations Tournament

Syracuse, Italy - The USA Men's Senior National Team fell to Hungary 12-11 earlier today to close out play in the eight nations tourney. Peter Varellas (Moraga, CA/Olympic Club) had three goals and Andy Stevens (Villa Park, CA/NYAC) posted 14 saves in the cage. Next up for Team USA will be the World Cup in Oradea, Romania; they open play with China on Tuesday.

The match with Hungary was closely contested throughout with both squads knotted up at 4-4 after the first quarter. In the second quarter Hungary went ahead 8-7 in what would prove to be the difference maker. Coming out of the second half in a one goal deficit the United States would post one goal in the third and three goals in the fourth but those efforts were matched by Hungary to end the match at 12-11 in favor of the Hungarians.

Jesse Smith (Coronado, CA/NYAC), Ryan Bailey (Long Beach, CA/Newport WPF), and JW Krumpholz (Santa Ana, CA/NYAC) all tallied two goals in the loss while Tommy Corcoran (Coronado, CA/Olympic Club) and Jeff Powers (San Luis Obispo, CA/Newport WPF) each scored once. Team USA and Hungary both went 4/9 on power plays while the United States was 1/1 on penalty shots.
