USA Men Topple Canada 11-6 To Open Eight Nations Tournament

Syracuse, Italy – July 21 – The USA Men’s Senior National Team opened the eight-nations tournament in Italy with a convincing 11-6 victory over Canada. Spurred on by four goals from Jeff Powers (San Luis Obispo, CA/Newport WPF) and a combined nine saves in cage from Merrill Moses (Palos Verdes, CA/NYAC) and Andy Stevens (Villa Park, CA/NYAC) the United Sates took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
After opening up a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter Team USA expanded to 7-4 at halftime. The defense was on point in the third quarter holding Canada scoreless while the offense added on two more goals to build out the lead to 9-4 going to the fourth. In the final period each team would add two goals leaving the United States in comfortable position to claim the win at 11-6.
Peter Varellas (Moraga, CA/Olympic Club) and Jeff Tyrrell (Granite Bay, CA/NYAC) tallied two goals each while Thomas Hopkins (Coronado, CA/Olympic Club), Tommy Corcoran (Coronado, CA/Olympic Club), and Tim Hutten (Seal Beach, CA/Newport WPF) each found the cage once.
Team USA went 5/13 on power pays while holding Canada to just 2/6. The United States are back in action tomorrow against.
