Italy – July 21 – The USA Men’s Junior National Team opened up competition in Italy with a 15-6 loss to the host Italians. Italy used a 6-2 lead after the first quarter to put the USA back on their heels and never relinquished the lead. Cody Moore led the offense with three goals while Chris Whitelegge stopped six shots in goal. Team USA returns to action tomorrow with matches against Australia and France.

After leading 6-2 at the end of the first quarter Italy was up 7-5 at halftime. The USA rally was stopped in the third quarter as they went scoreless and Italy added on four goals for an 11-5 lead going to the final period. The fourth quarter was more of the same as one goal from the United States was answered with four more goals from Italy for a 15-6 victory.

The Italians went 3/7 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties while the United States was 2/5 on power plays and 0/2 on penalties.  “We turned the ball over too many times and Italy capitalized on our mistakes,” said USA Head Coach Ryan Brown. “We are growing as a team and this was our first international game together so we are going to get better and better each game.”
