Russia and the Netherlands End In 10-10 Tie

Newport Beach, CA - December 10 - For the second straight night Russia got off to a strong start only to see their lead evaporate, this time in a match with the Netherlands that ended in a 10-10 draw. The Netherlands forged ahead 10-9 late in the match only to see Russia come back and tie with :39 left to end the match in a tie. This is each team's second straight draw as they both move to 0-0-2. The Netherlands are back in action tomorrow night against Australia while Russia will meet the United States. The Dutch were anchored by a six goal outburst from Meike Cabout, a tourney high thus far.
It was 4-0 Russia with 4:02 remaining in the first period when the Netherlands got on the board with two straight goals to end the first period at 4-2. In the second the Dutch stormed back to tie the game at 4-4 with 1:17 left only to have Russia re-take the lead at 5-4 with :51 remaining in the first half. The Netherlands again tied the match this time at 5-5 early in the third quarter. From there Russia looked to rebuild their advantage with two straight scores to go up 7-5.
The see-saw battle rolled along with the Dutch scoring consecutive goals to again tie the match at 7-7 moving to the fourth period. In the fourth the teams traded goals back and forth, the highlight when the Netherlands caught Russia with their goalie out of the cage and the Dutch goalie Ilse Van Der Meijden launched a shot the length of the pool to find the cage to give her squad a 9-8 lead. That wouldn't last as Russia scored and again the teams were tied at 9-9 with 1:05 left. That led to the sequence to close the game with each team scoring, once to tie at 10-10 while neither could score the final decisive goal.
