Montreal, Canada - December 6 - The USA Women's Senior National Team made it four straight victories to close out play at the Canada Cup and took home the Gold Medal with an 8-7 victory over Australia earlier today. Forel Davies, Melissa Seidemann, and Michelle Stein scored two goals apiece and it was Davies' goal with less than a minute remaining in the fourth that sealed the victory.
It was all Australia earlier on as the Aussies jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first quarter before Stein got the United States on the board to trail 2-1 headed to the second period. In the second Team USA got their offense in gear posting four goals from Seidemann, Davies, Lauren Wenger, and Kristen Dronberger to take a 5-3 lead at halftime.
Australia drew back to within one at 5-4 early in the third quarter but the United States would end the period again up two scores after goals from Seidemann and Stein. Leading 7-5 going into the fourth quarter the red, white, and blue found themselves on the receiving end of two straight Australia goals to tie the game at 7-7 with 2:49 to play in the match. From there it was left to Davies who lit the proverbial lamp with just :58 remaining in the match and it proved to be the difference.
Next up for the USA Women will be the 10th Holiday Cup that starts this Wednesday in Newport Beach, California. The USA hosts Canada, Australia, Italy, Russia, and the Netherlands in five days of action. For more information on schedules or to purchase tickets click here.
