Team USA Edged By Hungary 9-8 On Day Three Of World University Games

Belgrade, Serbia - July 4 - Despite a strong fourth quarter rally the United State was not able to topple Hungary, falling 9-8 on the third day of action at the World University Games. Shea Buckner and Zac Monsees led Team USA with two goals each while Jimmie Sandman went the whole way in net turning aside 14 shots. The United States are back in action July 6 against an opponent to be determined.

In this match the two teams were even early on, tied at 1-1 after the first quarter. In the second quarter Hungary outscored the USA 3-2 to hold a 4-3 lead at intermission. The third quarter saw Hungary start to pull away outscoring the United States 3-1 to build a 7-4 advantage going to the fourth. Team USA rallied in the fourth posting four goals but that was countered by two Hungarian goals and Hungary was able to hang on for the 9-8 win.

Along with Buckner and Monsees the United States got scores from Thomas Hale, John Mann, JP MacDonnell, and Matt Sagehorn. Hungary was a perfect 2/2 on player advantages while the United States struggled going just 3/13.
