USA Ties Japan 8-8 In First Match Of World University Games

Belgrade, Serbia - July 2 - Team USA started off the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia by tying Japan 8-8. Thomas Hale tallied three goals while Jimmie Sandman went the whole way in net turning aside 10 shots. The team is back in action tomorrow against Poland.

Japan started off the game in control jumping out to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. In the second period Team USA battled back outscoring Japan 3-1 to take a 5-4 advantage into halftime. In the third the USA continued to build posting three goals to just two for Japan and it was 8-6 in favor of the United States going to the fourth. In the fourth Japan was able to rally scoring two goals while keeping the United States off the board to tie the game at 8-8. That is way the contest would end as each team came away from the opening day of competition with a draw.

Hale's three goals were supplemented by scores from Tommy Corcoran, John Mann, Shea Buckner, JP MacDonnell, and Colin Mello.
