Podgorica, Montenegro - June 18 - The USA Men's Senior National Team suffered their first setback of the 2009 FINA World League Super Final as they fell to Serbia 10-7. With the loss Team USA is now set up for a match tomorrow with Australia to advance to medal contention.
In this game it was close early on as Serbia led by just a goal after the first at 3-2. In the second they distanced themselves a little further going up 7-4. In the second half the teams were able to match goals but with Serbia already holding a three goal advantage it did not bode well for the United States. It was 8-5 after the third quarter and then in the fourth Serbia tacked on two more goals to move on to the 10-7 victory.
Tony Azevedo led USA scorers with three goals. Jeff Powers added two tallies and Ryan Bailey and Jesse Smith scored a goal apiece. Merrill Moses went the whole way in net stopping eight shots. Team USA struggled on player advantages going 4/11 including two penalty shots.
"It was a pretty disappointing game. We played poorly on defense and did not execute our six on five and five on six," said USA Head Coach Terry Schroeder.
