Athlete of the Month - September 2010 Emma Soderquist - Greenwich Water Polo

My daughter Emma Soderquist started playing Water Polo three years ago and has been passionate about it ever since. But for Emma being able to play is not as easy as she would like. You see, Water Polo is not very popular where we live and many of her friends at home have never even heard of it! Where we live we do not have easy access to swimming pools and while Emma lives in New York, her team is in Connecticut. Playing Water Polo has become a unique talent that she loves and is very proud of, but to be able to be a part of the 14U Greenwich Water Polo team she has to be super organized and plan carefully to make sure she is on time for practice. On a good day the 20 miles can take 40 minutes to get there and with traffic sometimes over an hour. Getting to and from practice has proved challenging at times and requires a real dedication on Emma's part - especially this past summer as practices intensified in preparation for the Junior Olympics. There have been times when Emma has had to miss out or pass up activities or events closer to home, but it is a choice she is making because she values her position on her team and feels a responsibility to her teammates.

Emma is also well-rounded outside of the pool. The salutatorian of her eighth grade class she earned a full academic scholarship to Dominican Academy in New York City. She is a member of her school's mock trial and instructional television teams while also finding time to star as 'Belle' in the school production of Beauty and the Beast.

Emma can't imagine life without Water Polo and considers herself so incredibly lucky to be called her team's Goalie. In my opinion, Emma is a great example of an athlete that goes the extra mile for the team and the sport she loves!
