Athlete of the Month - May 2010 Alyssa and Candace Filippelli - Foothill Water Polo Club & Los Osos HS

Alyssa and Candace Filippelli had never heard of water polo before they walked onto the Los Osos High School pool deck in Rancho Cucamonga, California, the summer before their freshman year. These fraternal twin left-handers approached the game as they approached any other challenge and quickly proved themselves in a sport where experience matters. They offset their seeming deficiencies with hard work and a tenacity to prove their worth, both earning JV spots their first season. As sophomores, they easily made the varsity squad and helped the Grizzlies win league and advance to the semifinals in Division 3 CIF Southern Section. The two matured over the next few years as the perfect combination of Alyssa's finesse and outside shooting ability and Candace's strength and dominance as an inside presence. The twins helped lead their team to LOHS's first girls CIF championship in their junior year and almost repeated the win in a heartbreaking Final's loss in their senior year.

In addition to being well-balanced counterparts in the water, many think these twin sisters share a superior brain outside of it. During high school, they spent two years in marching band, four years in water polo and swim, belonged to many clubs and service organizations and still managed to take a total of 31 AP/Honors classes between them. Their hard work has paid off: Candace is the top student in her 716 person senior class, with a 4.67 GPA, and Alyssa isn't far behind, with a 4.31 GPA.

Alyssa's many academic and athletic awards include: Scholar- Athlete for water polo and swim, California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, "Scholar of the Week" Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Water Polo Baseline League: Honorable Mention, 1st Team All-League, and LOHS Team Honors: "Most Valuable Swimmer," and "Most Improved Varsity Player."

Candace's many academic and athletic awards include: Ranked 1st in her class, Top Scholar- Athlete for water polo and swim, California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, AP Scholar, San Bernardino County "Presidential Scholar, Cum Laude Society, Water Polo Baseline League: Honorable Mention, 2nd Team All-League, 1st Team All-League, CIF SS Division 5 Water Polo: 2nd Team, and LOHS Team Honors: "Most Improved Varsity Player," "Coach's Award," and "Best Offensive Player Award."

The girls also play for Foothill Club Water Polo. There, they have both earned Academic All-American Outstanding Achiever recognition for 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. They plan to make a return trip to Junior Olympics, this summer, and add another Academic All-American plaque to their collection.

Realizing the important role water polo has played in their lives, both girls will continue to play in college. Never intending to go together, both girls have chosen to attend Claremont McKenna College and play for former Pete Cutino award finalist Coach Greg Lonzo. There, Alyssa will major in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), and eventually head off to Law School. Candace will be joining the Joint Sciences Department and will follow a Pre-Med curriculum. Candace's ultimate goal is to become an Emergency Room Physician.

Alyssa and Candace's success, both in the water and out, has set a standard at Los Osos of what the consummate student-athlete should be and that is why I believe the Filippelli twins would be great "Athlete of the Month" honorees.
