Monthly Awards

Athlete of the Month - February 2010 Kirsten and Carla Tocchini - Burlingame Aquatics/Stanford Water Polo Club

Although your recognition program typically honors one athlete each month, I would like to nominate Kirsten and Carla Tocchini as "Co Athletes of the Month" based on teamwork and attitude in driving results.

The first half of my Co Nomination is in recognition of Kirsten (right in photo) who has provided years of leadership and support as an older sibling and fellow teammate; most of the time without even realizing it. She leads by example, quietly and confidently implementing strengths and skills shared with her by other teammates or her coaches. Although she may not be considered the highest scoring player in a game, she gets high scores for her hard work, dedication and respect for her coaches and teammates. She has worked with her sister Carla (left in photo) in the pool and out as a mentor, friend and teammate. I have seen them win and lose together. Kirsten always has the positive attitude putting everything into perspective; recognizing that any game, won or lost, is an opportunity for growth and more fulfilling than not playing at all. Kirsten was recognized by her high school coach her sophomore season as the most improved player. She made Varsity her junior year for her work ethics and sportsmanship and has just finished up her final high school season as a Senior at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco. Outside of school, Kirsten works with her polo club, Burlingame Aquatics Club (BAC), teaches swimming and is a volunteer children's musical theater counselor.

The second half of my Co Nomination is to recognize Carla who has worked very hard to set her own path in the sport. Carla has not missed a single season of polo since that first summer she followed her sister to practice. Carla's constant pursuit of excellence was rewarded when she helped her Stanford club team with a 1st place Pacific Zone finish qualifying for a spot at the 08 Speedo Cup in Michigan. She has worked hard juggling swimming, polo and academics. Carla was the student body president last year and like Kirsten, is just as devoted to her grades keeping the GPA in the 3.8 range. Starting her 3rd year of polo and freshman year of high school, Carla joined forces with Kirsten again at St Ignatius College Prep earning a spot on the Varsity team, and has just been named to her local Youth ODP training team. Out of the pool, Carla spends time doing local volunteer work which this past summer included work for her home polo club, Stanford, as one of the many host volunteers who helped make JOs such a great event.

This Co Athlete of the Month nomination is to recognize how one person can be great in their own right but it's the combination of our strengths that makes a team. I am nominating Kirsten and Carla, to share this recognition based on the combination of direction and leadership skills that Kirsten provides as a mentor along with the enthusiastic power, energy and game awareness that Carla shares. Together, they have challenged each other to be their best by recognizing and adopting each others’ strengths. Together, they have helped St. Ignatius College Prep finish 2009 with their best season ever which included a 3rd place finish in the West Catholic Athletic League, as well as a 2nd place finish in the California Interscholastic Federation/Central Coast Section, Division II.
