Athlete of the Month - December 2009 Katrina Husted - Napa Valley Water Polo Club/Vintage HS

I'd like to nominate my younger sister, Katrina Husted, a utility player from Vintage High School and Napa Valley Water Polo Club, for S & R Sport Athlete of the Month. I am her brother and one of her club coaches.

In Katrina's senior year of high school, she strives to make a name for not merely herself but for her team. She understands the importance to encourage the team to play at the highest level. She helps the team better their personal skills- from teaching the sport to those who are new, to pushing the veteran players to always up their game. As team captain, she puts the team's accomplishments above her personal accolades. Ask her, and every time she will tell you she wants the team to finish first.

Against the odds of coming from a smaller program, Katrina earned several distinguished awards. Highest on her list was making the Junior ODP Travel Team for Central California Zone 2009. She pushed herself to prove she had what it takes to play at that level where most girls on the team came from already successful programs. She'll never let on how proud and excited she truly is, because humility is one of her best qualities. You could see it in her eyes though- how proud she was for accomplishing this all on her own.

In high school, Katrina garnered Monticello Empire League MVP her junior and senior years (2008, 2009) as well as Second All-Sac-Joaquin Section Team '08, Second All-Sacramento Metro Team '08, and Girls All-City Napa Team '08. Her team won Monticello Empire League where Katrina led the team in season goals, steals, caused kick outs, shooting percentage, and second in assists.

Though her heart belongs to water polo, Katrina is a three sport high school athlete, being captain of the basketball team and swim team. Because she excelled so highly at these sports too, she was a finalist for the Napa Valley Register Athlete of the Year.

Academically, Katrina maintains a 3.7 GPA taking multiple honors and AP classes. She engulfs herself with reading when she isn't in the pool or gym. She is the ASB Director of Activities, involved in student leadership on campus, and represented Vintage as the Girls State Representative. Her other free time belongs to the community service she performs with Best Buddies program and the Every 15 Minutes program. She strives to make a difference in her community through these programs and is proud of the people she works with and helps.

As a coach, my favorite part of Katrina's game is her spatial awareness. She plays center, center defender, and attacker and can "see" the pool better than any player I've watched. She always looks to pass to the better shot option before shooting herself. She incorporates everyone on the team, can intelligently draw a kick out, and thread the needle with accurate passing. Sometimes she can be so good that it feels like an honor to see her play!

I am so unbelievably proud of her and the insanely beautiful person she has become. There's no where I see this more evident than the pool.

Editor's Note - Husted was just recently named First Team All Sac-Joaquin Section CIF
