Athlete of the Month - August 2012 Shannon Golden - CHAWP

I would like to nominate an amazing person and a talented athlete for the Athlete of the Month. Shannon Golden was a late comer to the world of water polo but that only spurred her on to work harder and try to be better and stronger. Joining the sport just prior to her freshman year in high school and striving to get noticed on a high school team coming off a CIF Championship was the equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest!

Well, maybe not quite, but it certainly had it's challenges, from being accepted and taken seriously by her teammates and coaches to developing strength and explosiveness necessary to excel. Spending untold hours in the water, both at her high school and at her CHAWP club team, her dedication allowed her to be the only athlete in school history to jump from the Frosh/Soph team in her freshmen year to Varsity as a sophomore. The other challenge came in the classroom, maintaining straight A's and taking a rigorous course load at the top academic school in the county. Shannon has done everything necessary and more to become a top scholar athlete at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca. This past summer she was 1 of 36 students in the nation chosen by the Wharton School of Business and the National Football League to attend their inaugural leadership conference at the University of Pennsylvania for top high school scholar athletes. Balancing this, along with her other extracurricular activities, which include an Internship for a California State Assemblyman Mike Morrell, and her water polo schedule have proved to be no easy feat. Academics have stayed at the top of Shannon's list throughout this hectic summer. Yet despite her split focus with college applications around the corner, AP summer homework, and SAT prep for her upcoming test, Shannon has still found the time to lead and mentor a young high school team this summer with expectations of returning to the CIF Championship game for the fifth straight year.

Needless to say, her journey continues into her Senior year, striving to do whatever it takes to get into the college of her choice and play water polo at the collegiate level. Shannon has many awards and accomplishments but the greatest asset Shannon has is herself. Shannon's time management skills combined with her relentless work ethic will aid her as she goes to play polo at the college level next year where she will be a great asset to any university she attends.
